solar chargers, wireless ip cameras
Microsoft's Kinect solar charger left us largely impressed, but in many instances the motion control system wasn't as precise as we would've liked. But according to a report from Eurogamer, Microsoft is looking to fix that with a forthcoming dashboard update.
According to the report, the update will greatly improve the performance of the system. Current limitations mean that the device has a resolution limit of 320x240, but the rumored update would increase this to 640x480. Similarly, the update could also increase the amount of data that the sensor can transfer, going from 15-16MB per second to 35MB per second. With these improvements, Kinect could potentially be much more precise, and able to recognize things like the rotation of the user's hand or even individual ipad accessories fingers.
The data limitations are currently in place so that the Xbox 360 can support multiple USB devices at one time. However, the report claims that Microsoft is working on improving the technology to get around this limitation. Microsoft has yet to comment on the report, so at this time it's just a rumor. But if true, it's likely we won't see these changes until the spring 2011 dashboard update at the earliest.
The second edition of the Humble Indie Bundle is in full swing, and with less than a week to go, it has already surpassed the $1 million mark. To celebrate, those who purchase the bundle will now also be able to activate the games on Steam.
"Steam has agreed to let iPad cases bundle purchasers activate their Humble Indie Bundle 2 games on Steam," Wolfire's John Graham told Ars. "Braid, Osmos, and Machinarium can be activated right now and Steam told us that the keys get users a subscription so that they can add Cortex Command and Revenge of the Titans to their accounts when the games become available on Steam later."
At the time of writing the bundle has been purchased by more than 150,000 users, for a total of $1,162,378 (and growing) in revenue. The average paying user has spent $7.42 on the games, while the biggest spender dropped $3,141.59. There's just over five days left in the pay-what-you-want sale, so you can still head over to the wireless ip camera official site if you want to get in on the action.
Perhaps you saw or heard the headlines last Friday or over the weekend: the United Nations could take over the Internet! (Or, as the Drudge Report put it, "UN PLANS INTERNET REGULATION.") This, you may not be surprised to learn, isn't quite accurate. A UN working group is currently talking about what, if anything, it could do to improve the operation of its Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a group devoted to dialogue but possessing no decision-making powers. But some are making plans to give the UN far more power.
Back in 2006, the UN endorsed a call from the World Summit on the Information Society to create a multi-stakeholder forum for dialogue about Internet governance issues. This became the IGF, which has now met five times—in Athens, Rio de Janeiro, electric cigarette, Hyderabad, Sharm El Sheikh, and most recently in Vilnius.
