headrest DVD player and electronic cigarette

Depending on perspective, Double Fine's ip camera next downloadable game, Stacking, can either be about a young boy's search for his missing family (and ultimately, his father), or it can be about taking dolls from behind and then having them fart on or punch others with reckless abandon. Project director Lee Petty (art director for previous Double Fine games) and studio founder Tim Schafer prefer to shy away from the latter definition, though -- Schafer's revision: "any doll facing away from you." However you word it, Stacking is ultimately a graphic adventure featuring matryoshkas that stack into each other for distinct abilities.

Like Costume Quest, Stacking tells its story without voiceover -- it even pursues a more stylized approach by purposefully mimicking silent movies; "We set the game in the late Victorian era, up until the early silent film, so we get to have these 'silent film stageplays' as we call them," notes Petty. The intro -- combining film grain, dialogue cards, purposefully herky-jerky animation, and accompanying piano music (some licensed classical pieces, some by former LucasArts composer Peter McConnell) -- establishes the iPad case eight-member Blackmore family. One day, the Blackmore patriarch gets a job as the Baron's new chimney sweep, and leaves for work...only to not actually come back. Weeks later, the Baron's men come to collect the rest of the Blackmore children (save Charlie, the tiniest Blackmore and the player character), and it then becomes up to Charlie to not only free his brothers and sisters, but also find his father once and for all. Along the way, Charlie will fix, sabotage, collect, and fart his way through various adventure game-style puzzles.

A new Dungeons & Dragons game will be coming to downloadable formats early next year, Atari and Bedlam Games announced today.

Titled Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale, it pits players against the forces of evil as they attempt to conquer the Dalelands. It looks to be an action multiplayer title, though it's not clear how much in the way of RPG elements it will include.

This is the second D&D game to be announced this year, the other ipad screen protector being the revival of Neverwinter. The latter is also a multiplayer title being developed in conjunction with Cryptic. The sheer volume of game releases, both on shelves and onto hard drives via digital distribution, can stagger even the most hardcore gamer. Who has time to check out every game when mammoths like Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, and so forth are taking up most of your gaming time? So of course, plenty of fine titles fall by the wayside while everyone consumes the megahits. For this holiday break, besides contributing money and man-hours to the juggernaut that is Call of Duty: Black Ops, now would be the opportune time to check out this handful (well, several handfuls) of other gems. And if there're any games that you think we (and everyone else) needs to know about and play, go ahead and leave some comments! Yet another leak has sprung from Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification. This time the ratings headrest DVD player board has prematurely outed an unannounced Ubisoft game by the name of Rayman 3D.

GoNintendo discovered the slip-up on the OFLC's website, where the game has been rated PG for mild violence. Given Ubisoft's support for the platform and the "3D" bit in the title, it seems reasonable to suspect a 3DS release for Rayman 3D; the OFLC's database, however, lists the game for multiple unspecified platforms.

Between Rayman Origins and this mystery project, Rayman fans should have plenty to look forward to in the near future -- provided Rayman 3D isn't just another Rabbids electronic cigarette spin-off, that is. We'll bring you the official details as soon as they're available.

R4i SDHC,Spy Gadgets and Acekard 2i

31/12/2010 11:40

If anything, 2010 was the year when our reliance on web services went through the roof. Whether it was social networking on iPad parts Facebook, calling our friends on Skype or remixing content on Tumblr, we spent an inordinate amount of time on the Internet. And just as our usage went up, so did our expectations of uptime and reliability of these services.

Nevertheless, as the recent Skype outage has shown, Internet-based services have a way of going down. Folks from AlertSite and Pingdom, two web-monitoring services, have put together a list of Internet outages that went down in 2010. I added some of my own to the list. Here is a summary of what I think were the top outages, followed by a small poll for you to pick the biggest Acekard 2i web outage of 2010.

Facebook. Outage started on Sept. 22 and ended on Sept. 23, 2010.  Service went down for about a third of the Facebook subscribers on day one, and nearly 66 percent on day two. Cause: Third party network provider. Facebook had a major outage in April 2010 as well.

Twitter. It’s the most crash-prone social service out there, thanks partly to its communication underpinnings. Twitter crashed in Jan. 2010 in the wake of Haiti earthquake, then later during the World Cup in June 2010.

Skype. On Dec. 22 and 23, the Internet telephony service went on the blink for millions of users. The cause was described as some errant Windows-based Buy android tablet supernodes, but the real cause is still unknown.

Tumblr. The New York-based blogging service was offline for nearly 24 hours and most of its users were offline in early December. Tumblr described it as a database cluster failing during maintenance.

Gmail. Google’s email service had a rough 2010. It was offline for about 2.5 hours, and the outage impacted many users in Feb. 2010. It went down again in March 2010 for 36 hours, and in Sept. 2010, routing issues caused the service to go on the blink.

online surveys

Foursquare. Down for 11 hours on Oct. 5 because of database problems. It crashed again on Oct. 6 for about six hours.

PayPal. In Oct. 2010, PayPal went on the blink for Spy gadgets about 4.5 hours, again due to networking problems.

Bonus Mention: Wordpress.com. The hosted blogging service went down for 110 minutes in Feb. 2010 due to networking configuration problems. It took down a majority of the blogging world for a few hours.

The basic premise behind the paper is pretty uncontroversial: at several points in the past, the Sahara has been humid enough to support abundant wildlife. These periods have been captured in everything from the fossil record to rock art left by humans during the most recent humid period. However, the potential for extensive human migrations across the Sahara during these times has been difficult to ascertain, leaving the Nile basin, which has remained a constant through various periods of climate change, as a potentially more appealing option.

The authors of the new paper, however, argue that the R4i SDHC Nile has been a relatively minor contributor to the distribution of species in North Africa.

solar charger,LED Watch,Green Laser and iPad cases

29/12/2010 11:44

By now, you must know that Monster Cable has a rather terrible reputation for threatening and suing all sorts of other solar charger companies over intellectual property issues -- often, it seems, with very little merit (remember when they went after "Monster Golf"? good times...). The latest is that Monster Cable, along with Beats Electronics, are going after competitor Fanny Wang Headphones, claiming both patent and trade dress infringement, because Fanny Wang made headphones that have some similarities in style. The patent (D552,077), by the way, is not a utility patent but a design patent, which is very narrowly focused.

In reading through the actual lawsuit (embedded below), the basic complaint appears to be that Fanny Wang's headphones look pretty similar to the Beats headphones -- but that's how competition works. Beats/Monster seem to take particular umbrage to the fact that all over their website Fanny Wang compares their headphones to Beats and gently LED Watch

chides Beats for not being the same quality. Again, this is how competition works. You see what works and you build something better. In fact, this point seems to undermine Beats/Monsters whole case: since Fanny Wang is making pretty clear that its products are different than Beats'. The response from Monster/Beats should be to keep building something better as well.

As you'd expect, Beats/Monster also demand all sorts of things (treble damages, destruction of all product, etc.). The complaint also points out that Fanny Wang is planning to be presenting its headphones at CES in early January, implicitly asking the court to stop Fanny Wang from appearing at the show. Remember, ipad accessories kids, the lesson of the day is "why compete, if you can have the government block your competition?"

Not surprisingly, Fanny Wang is using this as a chance to mock Monster for its litigious history and also for promoting its own product. The company's letter in response to the lawsuit (also embedded below) is relatively amusing, mocking the company for not even trying out their headphones to find out about the superior sound quality:

In short, Fanny Wang has no desire to infringe on your patents or trade dress or be associated with Monster’s sound quality. Instead, Fanny Wang desires to compete by building a superior product marketed under our different and innovative brand: Fanny Wang. In fact, the comparisons that you make reference to in your complaint and letter, clearly demonstrate Fanny Wang’s desire to differentiate itself from Monster & Beats products by identifying differences and allowing the consumer to make its own determinations. Such passing Green Laser references to competitors are routine in the marketplace and are clearly allowed under both state and federal trademark laws.

Separately, the company notes that tons of vendors in the space have similarly designed headphones because that's the trend in the marketplace. It also mocks Beats/Monster for claiming that the packaging of the two sets of headphones are the same by stating: "Have you even looked at our site?" and posting the following comparison:

If I had several hours to spare, I might try to go through it addressing his various arguments, from those which amount to unsubstantiated assertions about "the ideology that drives a lot of the online world," to ad-hominem sniping (for example, "we didn't necessarily get to know where Mr. Assange was at a given moment" -- maybe because he is doing things a lot of governments and organisations don't like and so discretion is the better part of valour), to outright misapprehension ("Wikileaks isn't really a "wiki," but it is designed to look and feel like the Wikipedia" -- er, well, no actually, it doesn't look like it in the slightest), and to various iPad cases straw men: "What if we come to be able to read each other's thoughts? Then there would be no thoughts. Your head has to be different from mine if you are to be a person with something to say to me." As far as I am aware, nobody is calling for mandatory telepathy.

PS3 Jailbreak is Good

28/12/2010 11:46

Our buddies at Engadget apple peel 520 had an interesting rumor to pass along this morning. It appears that Skype will be making a major announcement about video calling from iPhone (and other devices) during CES.

The first hint Engadget picked up on was that Skype will be participating in a CES panel discussion titled "Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime." Of course, panel discussions usually include participants from a number of companies, so that's not enough to base a rumor on.

The kicker was an email received by the team that contained a link to a help document on Skype's site. The title? "How do I make video calls with Skype for iPhone?" While a search of the Skype site didn't reveal that document to your humble TUAW correspondent, we trust our ps3 jailbreak sister site enough to believe that they had access to it.

There's no word on whether Skype will be providing the video calling capabilities to all major smartphone operating systems, but we'd bet that they would flip the switch on this capability for at least the iPhone and Android platforms on day one. The ability for the iPhone to make video calls over Skype to any other mobile phone or computer would at least put the damper on Sprint's Android phone ads touting "video calls from anywhere."

9to5Mac apparently snuck its way into the Mac App Store a little early (the marketplace is set to open up on January 6), and has brought back some screenshots of the app's OS X trappings. You can see the app's icon Laser pointer already, and the app will have a login screen very similar to what you already use in iTunes to install iOS apps.

Parental controls are available in the store's preferences, and various installs will all be handled by another app called "store helper." Those controls are configurable for various ages, so you'll be able to define if you want apps to run for users over 4, 9, 12, or 17.

Unfortunately, The Mac App Store won't support Game Center or in-app purchases at launch, but given the growing popularity of both of those elements, that may change in the future. We're inching ever closer to the Mac App Store's release, and LED Watch developers are undoubtedly working even over the holidays to make sure their apps are ready to go at launch. It should be a nice way to kick off 2011 for Apple. Calling Apple's turn-around over the last ten years "the most remarkable comeback in modern business history," the UK's Financial Times (free registration required) newspaper on Wednesday named Apple CEO Steve Jobs its "Person of the Year" for 2010. Thirty years after Jobs brought the company public at age 25, the proclamation focuses on his determined attention to detail and reputation as someone who "understands the art of the possible" with the ability to convince others of the plausibility of his ideas.

In talking to Financial Times, Roger McNamee, who recently attempted to rebuild Palm in Apple's image, said "Steve's the last of the great red led watch builders. What makes him different is that he's creating jobs and economic activity out of thin air while just about every other CEO in America is working out ways to cut costs and lay people off."

2010 has definitely been a good year for Apple, with MarketWatch naming Steve Jobs CEO of the Decade earlier this month and four Apple products making it onto Time Magazine's Top 10 Gadgets list right in time for the holidays. If estimates of Apple selling 100 million iPhones and 48 million iPads next year are correct, 2011 should be a fantastic year as well for Mr. Jobs and company.

solar chargers, wireless ip cameras

22/12/2010 10:55

Microsoft's Kinect solar charger left us largely impressed, but in many instances the motion control system wasn't as precise as we would've liked. But according to a report from Eurogamer, Microsoft is looking to fix that with a forthcoming dashboard update.

According to the report, the update will greatly improve the performance of the system. Current limitations mean that the device has a resolution limit of 320x240, but the rumored update would increase this to 640x480. Similarly, the update could also increase the amount of data that the sensor can transfer, going from 15-16MB per second to 35MB per second. With these improvements, Kinect could potentially be much more precise, and able to recognize things like the rotation of the user's hand or even individual ipad accessories fingers.

The data limitations are currently in place so that the Xbox 360 can support multiple USB devices at one time. However, the report claims that Microsoft is working on improving the technology to get around this limitation. Microsoft has yet to comment on the report, so at this time it's just a rumor. But if true, it's likely we won't see these changes until the spring 2011 dashboard update at the earliest.

The second edition of the Humble Indie Bundle is in full swing, and with less than a week to go, it has already surpassed the $1 million mark. To celebrate, those who purchase the bundle will now also be able to activate the games on Steam.

"Steam has agreed to let iPad cases bundle purchasers activate their Humble Indie Bundle 2 games on Steam," Wolfire's John Graham told Ars. "Braid, Osmos, and Machinarium can be activated right now and Steam told us that the keys get users a subscription so that they can add Cortex Command and Revenge of the Titans to their accounts when the games become available on Steam later."

At the time of writing the bundle has been purchased by more than 150,000 users, for a total of $1,162,378 (and growing) in revenue. The average paying user has spent $7.42 on the games, while the biggest spender dropped $3,141.59. There's just over five days left in the pay-what-you-want sale, so you can still head over to the wireless ip camera official site if you want to get in on the action.

Perhaps you saw or heard the headlines last Friday or over the weekend: the United Nations could take over the Internet! (Or, as the Drudge Report put it, "UN PLANS INTERNET REGULATION.") This, you may not be surprised to learn, isn't quite accurate. A UN working group is currently talking about what, if anything, it could do to improve the operation of its Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a group devoted to dialogue but possessing no decision-making powers. But some are making plans to give the UN far more power.

Back in 2006, the UN endorsed a call from the World Summit on the Information Society to create a multi-stakeholder forum for dialogue about Internet governance issues. This became the IGF, which has now met five times—in Athens, Rio de Janeiro, electric cigarette, Hyderabad, Sharm El Sheikh, and most recently in Vilnius.

Green Laser, LED Watch & iPhone 4 Cases

20/12/2010 10:56

The City of Vancouver doesn't like usage-based playstation move gun billing (UBB) for Internet access; this kind of traffic metering "will act as a tax on innovation, free expression, and empowerment," according to the city council. In addition, metering "discriminates" against high-bandwidth applications like audio and video. Remove the caps!

Yesterday, the Vancouver city council passed a resolution on "Affordable Internet Access in Vancouver" in which it railed against UBB and blasted incumbent Internet providers like Bell Canada for imposing "unjust financial limitations on how many gigabytes of usage their independent competitors can provide to their customers."

Microsoft is starting to feel the holiday cheer, and has announced a Christmastime sale on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The discounts range from bigger titles rolling out as games on demand, like Just Cause 2 and Red Dead Redemption playstation move accessories, to smaller indie games like Comic Jumper and The Undergarden.

The sale includes titles we've raved about in the past, such as the platformer Super Meat Boy and strategy world-building game Carcassonne. There are also a couple of games whose prices we balked at, like Toy Soldiers and Castle Crashers, that now seem a bit more reasonable.

As part of the sale, Microsoft is adding a few more full-size games to its on-demand service, like Red Dead Redemption, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Just Cause 2, and Ghostbusters. DLC for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Bomberman: Live Battlefest will also be added alongside iPhone 4 Cases a few new arcade games.

Discounts range from 33 to 50 percent and bring prices down to between five and ten dollars. The sale runs from December 21 to December 31, so you'll get a chance to use all those Microsoft points from friends who didn't know what else to get you. Every day of the LED Watch sale a surprise discount will be announced on Major Nelson's blog, so it might be worth keeping an eye out there too.

It's a traveler's nightmare: being in a foreign country surrounded by signs in another language and nothing but a guidebook to help you. If only there was a way to have every sign translated in realtime—perhaps in the form of a mini translator gnome in your pocket—so you wouldn't have to look up each word individually. A new iOS app claims to be that gnome: Word Lens by Quest Visual is a new arrival on the App Store, and already has the Internet abuzz by its apparently magical abilities to translate the written word in realtime.

The app itself is "free" on the App Store—the scare quotes are because you can't actually do any language translations without paying for the add-on word packs. So far, the word packs include Spanish to English and English to Spanish, sold separately for $4.99 apiece until the end of the year, when they'll go up to $10. That may seem steep for in-app purchases for each language (I balked at first too), but Green Laser Word Lens generally does a good enough job that it's worth the money if you're in need of its services.

red led watch & Laser pointer

14/12/2010 11:45

Paul Graham, on LED Watch what to collectively call iPhones, iPads, and Android touchscreen devices:

After a few seconds it struck me that what we’ll end up calling these things is tablets. The only reason we even consider calling them “mobile devices” is that the iPhone preceded the iPad. If the iPad had come first, we wouldn’t think of the iPhone as a phone; we’d think of it as a tablet small enough to hold up to your ear.

The iPhone isn’t so much a phone as a replacement for a phone.

Graham’s piece reminds me of what I consider the central hook to a great app for these tablets: that it should seem, when you’re using it, that the entire device was meant for it. E.g., a good chess game for the iPhone should make the iPhone itself feel like a chess playing device. When you’re in Mobile Safari, it feels like you’re holding a dedicated web browsing Laser pointer device. Only when you’re in the Phone app does the iPhone feel like a phone.

Jenny Williams, reporting for Computer Weekly:

HTC has spoken out against internet reports that claim HTC HD7 handsets suffer from antenna ‘death grip’ problems, similar to those experienced by Apple’s iPhone 4 users. […]

In a statement, a HTC spokesman said, “Quality in industrial design is of key importance to HTC. To ensure the best possible signal strength, antennas are placed in the area least likely to be covered by a person’s face or hands while the phone is in use. However, it is inevitable that a phone’s signal apple peel 520 strength will weaken a little when covered in its entirety by a user’s palm or fingers. “

From The Wall Street Journal, back on July 19:

Taiwan-based HTC said Monday that reception problems aren’t common on smartphones and Apple should address the problem on its own rather than blame competitors.

“The reception problems are certainly not common among smartphones,” HTC Chief Financial Officer Hui-Meng Cheng said. “[Apple] apparently didn’t give operators enough time to test the phone.” Amazon Web Services makes a strong argument that government pressure had nothing to do with their decision to boot ps3 jailbreak WikiLeaks, but rather clear violations of their terms of service:

AWS does not pre-screen its customers, but it does have terms of service that must be followed. WikiLeaks was not following them. There were several parts they were violating. For example, our terms of service state that “you represent and warrant that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to the content… that use of the content you supply does not violate this policy and will not cause injury to any person or entity.” It’s clear that WikiLeaks doesn’t own or otherwise control all the rights to this classified content. Further, it is not credible that the extraordinary volume of 250,000 classified documents that WikiLeaks is publishing could have been carefully redacted in such a way as to ensure that they weren’t putting innocent people in jeopardy.

Fair enough. But so would AWS likewise refuse to provide red led watch hosting to The New York Times or The Guardian? Will Amazon refuse to sell books containing text from these leaked diplomatic cables?

usb to hdmi & playstation move accessories

So just what exactly has BioWare been teasing usb to hdmi to reveal at the Spike TV VGAs for the last couple of weeks? Would you believe it is, after all, Mass Effect 3? Joystiq reports that a "trusted source" has informed them the mystery game, first teased with the single image above, will indeed be the final chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy.

What's more, this source says Mass Effect 3 will feature some kind of multiplayer mode, a first for the series. What this source couldn't confirm, though, is whe ther the VGA reveal will highlight the multiplayer or not.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard that BioWare's reveal will be Mass Effect 3 -- shortly after the tease first popped up, Sony Russia apparently spilled the beans on their Twitter feed, stating the game would be Mass Effect 3. It was also previously rumored that the game would be a Mass Effect spin-off that was specifically multiplayer playstation move gun focused...so perhaps if BioWare was at some point planning to make such a game, they simply decided to roll the multiplayer features into Mass Effect 3?

The Xbox 360 is the best-selling home console for the sixth consecutive month thanks to the successful launch of the Kinect, but the Wii isn't far behind.

Microsoft revealed today that 1.37 million Xbox 360s were sold over the course of November. These numbers continue a strong a year for Microsoft, which has seen the Xbox 360's year-to-date sales growth 42 percent, and the NPD Group noted in its report that the Kinect is the top-selling accessory "in terms of dollar sales on a year-to-date basis."

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Wii has recovered somewhat from sluggish sales to sell 1.27 million units, according to Bloomberg. The Wii sold 254,000 units in September in what analyst Michael Pachter blamed on "gamer fatique and a lack of high-profile LED Watch releases."

wireless ip camera and LED Digital Watch

10/12/2010 11:18

The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) sets up a system through which the US government can blacklist wireless ip camera a pirate website from the Domain Name System, ban credit card companies from processing US payments to the site, and forbid online ad networks from working with the site. "We are disappointed that the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning chose to disregard the concerns of public-interest groups, Internet engineers, Internet companies, human-rights groups and law professors in approving a bill that could do great harm to the public and to the Internet," said Public Knowledge president Gigi Sohn, who pledged to craft a "more narrowly tailored bill" next year to deal with "rogue websites."

The Xbox Live Arcade Pac-Man Championship electric cigarette Edition DX is ridiculous.

That may not mean a whole lot considering just how ridiculous the original Championship Edition was, but a handful of changes make the DX version even more insane. And that's a good thing. The setup is exactly the same. The game plays out like a remixed version of Pac-Man where the maze is constantly changing and the game tries to mesmerize you with psychedelic visuals. DX features standard upgrades like a handful of new mazes and game modes, but the gameplay tweaks are what makes LED Digital Watch this version crazier—and better—than its predecessor.

What if the wireless industry started selling its data plans like the cable industry: the faster the connection, the more you pay? That's one of the options that Verizon is currently considering for its 4G (LTE) network. Though the company hasn't yet decided how it wants to slice up its 4G data plans, divvying it up by speed would be a major divergence from what US wireless carriers have traditionally done.

In fact, Verizon may take it one step further than splitting things up into good, better, and best speeds. The company may combine those tiers with download limits per tier—a sort of mishmash between what most US cell carriers already offer and something new.

"If you want to pay for less speed, you'll pay for less speed and consume more, or you can pay for high speed and consume less," Verizon CFO Fran Shammo told the Wall Street Journal in an interview.

So far, 4G (WiMAX) data in the US has been unrestricted as the cell carriers focus on locking down their 3G networks. Sprint VP of 4G Todd Rowley said recently that that its users currently download about 7GB per month—two gigs per month laser pen higher than the data limit on the 3G network—and that's okay. The company is still trying to attract new users to its higher-speed network and doesn't plan to start capping downloads unless data use explodes to something closer to 20GB per month, Rowley said.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg agreed that unlimited data plans won't necessarily disappear, but said the company is still working through what's fair to the customer. It seems inevitable that there will be a shift to 4G tiers as more customers get on board, though, and Verizon thinks the launch of its LTE network is the right time to introduce tiered service. Verizon expects 75 percent of its contract customers to be using data in the next three to four years, and it wants to be prepared to make those customers open their wallets.

In a related tidbit, Seidenberg added that Verizon's LTE network is what got Apple to let the carrier start selling iPad + MiFi bundles. He stopped short of saying that Apple was going to launch the iPhone on Verizon thanks to LTE, though (a belief that we hold here at the Ars Orbiting HQ). Seidenberg left that question hanging and simply said, "Our interests are beginning to come together more but they have to take steps to align their iPhone 4 Case technology with ours."
